DarkSky Advocates of the DarkSky Bolivar-Harpers Ferry Chapter have been busy providing education and awareness to our communities regarding light pollution. The main focus is to reduce unnecessary light pollution. Plants and animals rely on Earth’s natural cycle of light and dark to survive. Light pollution can also negatively affect human health, obscure views, and contribute to climate change. Many people are unaware that light can be considered a pollutant. After an informative presentation during the Bolivar Town Council meeting In April, elected officials voted unanimously to approve a Proclamation declaring the week of April 13-20, 2026, International DarkSky Week in Bolivar. This proclamation does not require individuals to turn off their lights but to simply understand the effects of light pollution. Pamphlets and other resources are being made available in this month’s newsletter, town website, and on our FaceBook page in order to provide our community a better understanding of the meaning of light pollution.
